Presentation abstract: This session investigates the internal behaviour of Real Application Clusters (RAC databases). We will consider the characteristics of RAC instances including SGA structures, background processes and redo logging. We will then study the underlying mechanisms which are used to support inter-instance block transfers using the Global Cache Service (GCS) and inter-instance locking using Global Enqueue Services (GES). We will consider how these structures impact performance and scalability and how they are used in the event of a node failure. Finally we will discuss the collection and interpretation of RAC-specific diagnostic information using events, dumps, hidden parameters and the LKDEBUG utility.
