Presentation Title: A brief, but practical, introduction to Oracle analytic functions
Speaker: Mr Peter Scott
Company: Getronics UK Ltd
Co-presenter:
Presentation abstract: Analytic functions have been available since version 8.1.6 of the Oracle database. However, like many newer features, they are often overlooked by developers and DBAs. This paper presents an overview of the analytic functions and provides a simple rationale for understanding the partitioning, ordering, and windowing components of analytic function syntax. Some typical (and also less common) uses of anlytic functions will be presented and comparsion with more traditional relational functions, both in terms of query performance and query 'maintainability', will be made. Finally, some pitfalls in the use of analytic functions will be discussed.
