Presentation Title: Applied Mathematics for Database Professionals
Speaker: Mr Toon Koppelaars

Presentation abstract: Toon Koppelaars is working on an exciting new book, Applied Mathematics for Database Professionals, which he started writing with Lex de Haan. Creating solid database designs is out nowadays . Everybody is talking about business logic and business rules. These concepts however overlap (significantly) with data integrity constraints. Since the relational model for databases is firmly founded in mathematics, you can use mathematics to specify, very precisely, a full database design including all relevant data integrity constraints (and thereby a lot of business logic and rules). This session will first cover various mathematical concepts (from logic and elementary set theory). And then a demonstration of how to formally specify a database design will be given and the benefits of doing so will be explained.

Speaker biography: Toon Koppelaars is a long-time Oracle technology user, having used the Oracle database and tools software since 1987. During his career he has been involved in both application development as well as database administration. Within the data modeling area, the formal specification and robust implementation of data integrity constraints (also known as business rules) is one of his special interest areas. He is currently employed as an IT architect at Centraal Boekhuis BV, a well known Oracle shop in The Netherlands.
