Presentation Title: Inside the Oracle Database 11g Optimiser
Speaker: Dr Lilian Hobbs
Company: Oracle
Co-presenter: Ms Maria Colgan - Oracle
Presentation abstract: The cost-based optimizer has a reputation for being complicated and requiring a degree in black magic to manage it correctly, consequently most of us leave it well alone or try gentle influences such as hints. Typically, 95% of queries have acceptable performance, but for the remaining 5%, being able to guarantee accurate cardinality estimates and maintain plan stability is every DBA's dream. Have you ever had an execution plan change for no apparent reason? Have you ever wondered why the Optimizer kept getting the selectivity for correlated columns wrong? Have you used Bind variables and had the Optimizer peek one value that produces a plan that is suboptimal for all other values? Worried about upgrading to release 11g? If you have run into one or more of these problems then this is the session for you. This presentation looks at the new optimzer features in detail and explains how they will simplify a DBAs life and finally remove the black magic that has surrounded the cost-based optimizer.
